Transfer Story: Micaela Quisbert Mendoza
Transfer Story Q&A:
1) How would you describe your first academic year at NJIT?
-
My first academic year at NJIT was interesting because I only spent one semester on campus before the transition to online learning. During my time on campus, I took part in various volunteer opportunities and met amazing students and staff that helped me transition to NJIT. While it became harder to remain connected during remote learning, NJIT provided many resources that helped me continue to stay connected with the college community.
2) What challenges if any, did you face as a transfer student and how did NJIT help you to overcome those challenges?
-
The main challenge I faced was getting to know students in my major. After my first semester at NJIT the following semesters were easier to get know other students. Since adjusting to remote learning was new to all students, we were all able to get to know each other and help each other along the way.
3) Please describe your experience with NJIT classes and/or tutoring in an online, hybrid, or converged learning format?
-
Although it took some time to adjust, the time I have spent learning in an online setting has been great. Through virtual communication platforms like WebEx, it has become easier to schedule meetings with professors and students. As a commuter, this helped because I do not have to commute 2 hours as I did when classes were in person.
4) What are your plans after graduation?
-
After graduation, I plan on studying abroad in South Korea and get my master’s degree in Industrial Engineering! When done I hope to come back to the U.S to work as a supply chain engineer.
5) What advice would you give to a prospective transfer student?
-
During your first semester at NJIT try to involve yourself as much as possible! By joining clubs, going to the career center, and joining professional organizations will help you explore your interests before graduating. If you are interested in studying abroad as an undergrad or graduate take some time to attend events hosted by The Office of Global Initiatives. There are various scholarships, programs, and fellowships that will match what you are looking for!
6) What is a major difference between NJIT and the previous school you transferred from?
-
The major difference was the college size. In the beginning, it was difficult to keep up with what was happening around the NJIT community since there are various clubs, and organizations. At my previous college because the college community was smaller it was easier to know what was happening.
7) What are the three things you like best about NJIT?
-
Academic support: I have met very knowledgeable and caring Professors that have helped me and advised me during my undergraduate journey.
-
Career support: Career Development Services at NJIT has wonderful staff and advisors that are there to help navigate you on your way to get an internship, co-op, or entry-level job after graduation. CDS also holds many informational events!
-
Volunteer opportunities: There are many fun volunteer opportunities on-campus and off-campus for students.
