2014 Excellence in Research Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Yeheskel Bar-Ness has worked for four decades to advance the field of electrical and computer engineering. He serves as director of The Elisha Yegal Bar-Ness Center for Wireless Communications and Signal Processing Research, which has long been in the forefront of wireless technology. Since its inception in 1985, the Center has contributed to technological advances in communications with research in many areas of communication theory. Researchers at the Center have developed a set of algorithms that facilitate code division multiple access, a digital cellphone technology that eliminates interference caused by high cellphone usage.

Dr. Bar-Ness and his colleagues have developed breakthrough technologies for industry such as multiple input/multiple output, which uses antenna arrays to increase the bit rate of wireless communications. He also led a collaborative project with Samsung to improve the capability of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), a certification mark for products that pass conformity tests established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). 

He has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on research grants or contracts supported by the National Science Foundation, the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, and the Naval Oceanic Center. In 1973, he received the Kaplan Prize, awarded annually by the government of Israel to the 10 best technical contributors. He was named an Inventor of the Year in 2006 by the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame and received the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in 2008.
