Beware of Tuition Payment Scams
Scammers may approach you with offers to pay your tuition, usually in exchange for personal information or a "small fee." These offers are fraudulent and can lead to financial loss or identity theft.
Verify Unsolicited Offers: Any offer to pay your tuition should be approached with caution. Verify the legitimacy of such offers through official university channels before proceeding.
Official Payment Channels: Always use the university’s official payment system for your tuition fees. Be wary of requests to use alternative payment methods like wire transfers, gift cards, stolen credit cards or cryptocurrency.

Student Health Insurance
Health Insurance Information
In keeping with its institutional responsibility to protect the health and well-being of our students, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) requires all full-time, domestic undergraduate students carrying 12 or more credit hours, domestic graduate students carrying a minimum of 9 credit hours, and F1 and J1 international students carrying 1 or more credit hours to maintain health insurance coverage throughout the academic year. This helps to protect against unexpected high medical costs and to provide access to quality care while they are at school or traveling abroad.
NJIT automatically charges Student Health Insurance to any registered student who meets the criteria listed below:
- An Undergraduate student taking 12 or more credits in the Fall semester.
- Any Graduate student taking 9 or more credits in the Fall semester.
- Any registered student with a Visa status of F1/J1.
- Any "New" (was not here for the Fall term) Undergraduate student taking 12 or more credits in the Spring semester.
- Any "New"(was not here for the Fall term) Graduate student taking 9 or more credits in the Spring semester.
Please note that students enrolled in a fully online program or registered exclusively in online courses for the semester may not qualify for the Student Health Insurance. Students who are not automatically charged for Student Health Insurance and wish to obtain the school’s coverage may apply and pay for it directly through United Healthcare. The instructions for direct purchase of the Student Health Insurance Plan can be found in the Downloadable Instructions section of our website.
To view benefit coverage, print an ID card, or obtain other information relating to the Student Health Insurance plan, please visit the United Healthcare Student Health website for more details.
Enrolling in the Student Health Insurance Plan
In order to set-up an account with United Healthcare, you will need to enroll in the plan. You can click on this link "UHC Enrollment" and select Opt-In. You will receive an email confirming your enrollment. Please allow 24-hours for our record to update.
Waiving of Student Health Insurance
You may waive coverage under the Student Health Insurance Plan if you have health insurance that meets all of the plan requirements listed in the Waive Insurance section of our website. You will need to provide information about your current coverage. An accepted waiver applies to the academic year during which it is filed, and is typically processed within two to three business days. Please note, if you are not charged the student health insurance fee, a waiver is unnecessary. Please check your student account to verify whether or not you have been charged.
Please allow for up to 48 hours after the student health insurance charge posts to your student account before attempting to file a waiver. Our system needs this time to update your waiver eligibility.
Waivers will not be accepted after the waiver period expires and the student will be responsible for the insurance charge, without exceptions.

UCAN Health Insurance
Under the current UCAN Agreement, NJIT will cover Student Health Insurance premiums for Graduate Student Employees who meet its criteria for governance (full-time enrollment or certification and an award for full stipend and tuition).
NJIT automatically charges the premium cost to any registered graduate student who meets the criteria listed below:
- Any graduate student taking 9 or more credits in the fall semester, or
- Any registered graduate student with a Visa status of F1/J1, or
- Any "new" (spring-incoming) graduate student taking 9 or more credits in the spring semester.
As UCAN members, NJIT will issue a credit in the form of a financial aid award to your account to cover this cost.
If you are a domestic student taking less than 9 credits and wish to have NJIT cover the cost of the Student Health Insurance premium, you must first be coded as UCAN eligible in our system (only if you meet the criteria outlined above) before emailing the Bursar's Office to self-identify:
- To be coded in the system as UCAN eligible while enrolled in less than 9 credits, you must:
- Request Full-Time Certification online. You must meet the criteria listed here to receive approval from GSO.
- Note that Full-Time Certification is required for the processing of financial-support awards. You must also accept your award on Highlander Pipeline as per the instructions you will receive with the award offer.
- Email the Bursar's Office at healthinsurance@njit.edu to self-identify as a UCAN student and request the charge for Student Health Insurance be added to the account. The deadline to send this email is September 25, 2024.
Once the insurance charge is on your student account, you can check if your student health insurance is active by navigating to United Healthcare Insurance Card and select "Get your ID Card," which requires you to verify your identity.
The Fall 2024 Insurance Waiver deadline is October 7, 2024
The Spring 2025 Insurance Waiver deadline is February 3, 2025
If you currently have health insurance and would like to have the Student Health Insurance Plan charge waived, you must submit your current plan information for review by United Healthcare. Once your waiver is submitted and approved, please allow two to three business days for the credit to be processed on your NJIT student account. All records will be audited by United Healthcare, and if they determine that the insurance you submitted does not meet the minimum criteria for acceptable coverage, the insurance charge will be placed back on your student record. You will have the opportunity to re-submit your insurance information to United Healthcare in this case.
Before you begin the waiver process, please review the instructions by clicking on this link: Waiver Process Instructions
Students must submit a waiver (subject to approval) every academic year if they have their own coverage and wish to waive the NJIT Student Health Insurance Plan. Waivers submitted after the posted deadline will not be accepted and students will be responsible for the charge on their student account, without exception. Additional information is as follows:
- Students may opt to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan by submitting proof of current coverage through a waiver to United Healthcare.
- United Healthcare will receive the waiver and certify external insurance coverage for NJIT.
- All F1/J1 Visa students who are not part of the Approved Sponsor listing are prohibited from waiving the Student Health Insurance.
- You will need your 8 digit student ID number, date of birth, and a copy of your insurance card to complete the waiver. Please follow the link below to complete the application.
- Once your waiver is accepted by NJIT and United Healthcare, a credit for the full amount of the student health insurance charge will be posted to your student account within two to three business days. If the waiver credit creates an overall credit balance on your student account, a refund will be issued to you.
