Transfer Out
Instructions for transferring your current SEVIS record to another US institution.
A student who is maintaining valid F-1 status may transfer from one DHS-approved school to another by following the transfer procedures set forth in 8 CFR 214.2(f)(8). Having your SEVIS record transferred allows you to:
- Keep the same SEVIS record and ID number.
- Not pay the I-901 SEVIS fee again.
- Remain in the U.S. while you wait for your new program to start.
Be aware that transferring your SEVIS record to another institution effectively ends any employment you may have associated with NJIT, including on-campus employment, CPT or OPT. Students may NOT continue to work at NJIT or with NJIT approved CPT or OPT after their SEVIS record has been released to another institution.
**DO NOT SUBMIT A TRANSFER OUT REQUEST TO OGI UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN OF YOUR TRANSFER SCHOOL AND RELEASE DATE.**
Students may choose to transfer their F-1 SEVIS records to another U..S institution in order to begin a new program of study at the following times:
- After completing an NJIT program or period of Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT): Request your transfer before the end of your grace period (60 days after completion of program).
- Coursework at your new school must begin in the next available semester or within 5 months of the last date of enrollment and attendance at NJIT, whichever comes first.
- Between semesters: Request your transfer before the start of the next upcoming semester at NJIT.
- Coursework at your new school must begin in the next available semester or within 5 months of the last date of enrollment and attendance at NJIT, whichever comes first.
- Mid-semester: Any student requesting a transfer out after the Add/Drop deadline and before the last day of the semester must attend classes and otherwise maintain status until the transfer release date.
- Students may not transfer an Active SEVIS record after the semester has begun if full-time enrollment has not been maintained until the date of transfer.
- Failure to enroll and ATTEND courses full-time after the semester start date is a violation of F-1 status and will result in termination of your SEVIS record.
- Students are required to pay tuition and fees. Please refer to the NJIT academic calendar for withdrawal and refund deadlines.
- SEVIS record will be released 7 days (1 week) before the student's program start date at the new school.
- Student must submit a request to OGI to withdraw from all courses once the SEVIS record has been released.
- During OPT employment period: You can request a transfer at any point during your OPT or before the end of your 60-day post OPT grace period.
- Your employment authorization will end the day your SEVIS record is transferred.
- Classes must begin within 5 months of the day your SEVIS record was transferred or the last day on your EAD, whichever is sooner.
- If you choose to transfer your SEVIS record prior to the end of your OPT period, you will lose any remaining days of OPT work authorization.
- **DO NOT SUBMIT A TRANSFER OUT REQUEST TO THE OGI UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN OF YOUR TRANSFER SCHOOL AND RELEASE DATE.
- Once you submit this request, your transfer will be scheduled in SEVIS for the date you indicate.
- Do not submit this request to the OGI until you are certain that you wish to transfer, the school you wish to transfer your record to, and the date on which you want this transfer completed.
**DO NOT SUBMIT A TRANSFER OUT REQUEST TO THE OGI UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN OF YOUR TRANSFER SCHOOL AND RELEASE DATE.
- Once you submit this request, your transfer will be scheduled in SEVIS for the date you indicate.
- Do not submit this request to the OGI until you are certain that you wish to transfer, the school you wish to transfer your record to, and the date on which you want this transfer completed.

Submit a copy of your letter of acceptance to the new school to the Office of Global Initiatives via the myGlobal International Student Portal.
- Ph.D. students who have not yet received their degree must meet with the Office of Graduate Studies and obtain the signature of the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies on the transfer out form.
Selecting your requested Transfer Release Date:
- The Transfer Release Date is the date you would like for your SEVIS record to be transferred to your new institution.
- Processing time for all transfer out requests is 7 business days. Please keep this in mind when requesting your Transfer Release Date. The OGI processes all requests as quickly as possible, in the order they are received.
- If your request is not processed by the requested day (because you requested a date sooner than the processing time required by the OGI), your record will be transferred on the day it is processed (within 7 business days of when it was submitted).
- After your requested release date/7 business days, students should contact their new institution for information about their SEVIS records.
- If you are engaged in any on or off campus employment, you may continue to work until the day your record is transferred. After this date, you should contact your new school prior to engaging in ANY employment.
- If you are traveling outside the U.S. and plan to reenter after your SEVIS record is transferred, you must re-enter with the new I-20 from your new school. You may not re-enter the US after your record is transferred with a Form I-20 from NJIT.
It is your responsibility to drop from courses for the upcoming semester (if you have already registered). The OGI is not able to drop your courses, you must do this in your NJIT Pipeline or with the Office of the Registrar.

**DO NOT SUBMIT THIS REQUEST UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN OF YOUR TRANSFER OUT DECISION. Once this is submitted, it will be processed and cannot be canceled**
If you would like to attend another institutions and have not entered the U.S. yet, please follow the instructions bellow:
- Obtain a Form I-20 from the school you plan to attend.
- Contact your U.S. Consulate to update the notation on your F-1 visa with the name of the school you actually plan to attend.
- Use the Form I-20 from that school to enter the U.S.
- Contact the NJIT Office of Admissions to inform them that you will not be attending NJIT.
- Email admissions@njit.edu
- Your NJIT Form I-20 and SEVIS record will be canceled and will no longer be active for use. You will use the Form I-20 and SEVIS record from your intended school moving forward.
If you are already in the U.S., and have entered using the NJIT Form I-20, or transferred your record from another school to NJIT:

Students must submit the request to the Office of Global Initiatives via the myGlobal International Student Portal, and attach ALL required documents (listed below).

Documents must be attached in ONE (1) PDF. If multiple documents need to be submitted, students must merge/combine them into one document before submitting the transfer request.

Proof of the start of classes at the new school. This can be:

Email from an official at the new school indicating the first day of classes
- Transfer school's I-20 showing program start date

Acceptance letter with start date listed

All applications submitted to OGI will be processed in the order they are received, within 4-7 business days.

If your new school requires your record transferred sooner than this, you must inform them that you have recently submitted the request and it will be processed within 4-7 days.

It is your responsibility to plan your enrollment and submit requests in a timely manner.

Applications to OGI cannot be expedited. Our office processes all requests as quickly as possible. If your start date at your new school is in less than 7 business days, you must explain the transfer timeline to your intended school officials.

Your SEVIS record will be transferred to your new school on the "Transfer Release Date" you have indicated on the form, or, on the date that the transfer is processed (if the release date has already passed).

Students should contact their new school moving forward to obtain an updated Form I-20

There is no need to contact OGI to verify your record is transferred. As indicated above, your record will be transferred on the date requested, or the date it is processed

If you request a same-day or next-day transfer release date, your record will be transferred on the date it is processed, within 4-7 days of your request submission.

It is your responsibility to withdraw from courses for the upcoming semester if you have already registered.

The OGI is not able to drop your courses, you must do this in your NJIT Pipeline or with the Office of the Registrar.

Do not submit this request to OGI until you are certain that you wish to transfer, certain of the school you wish to transfer to, and the date on which you want this transfer completed.

Once your transfer is processed, it cannot be canceled. After this, you must work with your new school to obtain an updated Form I-20.

Transfer requests for Initial status students must be submitted to OGI, with all required documents, by the end of the drop/add period for each semester.

Extensions will not be granted for late requests.

SEVIS records will be terminated after the drop/add period has ended if students are not enrolled in, and attending, courses.
