Do I need to take First Year Seminar ?

Yes, First Year Seminar is a mandatory class that meets most of the semester and helps to welcome new first-year students to NJIT. This helpful course will support a student's transition to college life and is a requirement to graduate.

What if I fail the First Year Seminar?

In the event that a student does not pass First Year Seminar, they will be required to retake the course until they earn a passing grade.

How do I check my grades?

Often students can check their grades in their class Canvas page. The course syllabus should also outline a grading scale that students can track their grades with.

What will I get out of First Year Seminar?
-
First Year Seminar covers a wide range of topics including how to register for classes, strategies to be successful in classes, learning about various tutoring and support resources, how to manage time as a college student, etc. There is time dedicated to exploring the campus resources like the library and research services, counseling, and reasons to speak with the Dean of Students. The overall goal of this course is to help students understand NJIT policy, learn about key resources available and connect with peers.

What is the Learning Communities Lounge?

The lounge is a great place to meet other students, study for exams, hang out with friends, relax and have fun. There is space for students to play games, work on their homework, sit and chat with peers, etc. It is located in Central King Building 205.

How safe is the campus? How involved is Public Safety on campus?

NJIT's Campus Police Department is very involved on campus, with our public safety being a certified police station in Newark. Always practice safe precautions while walking around outside of campus such as staying in groups, avoid walking around at night, and letting friends/family know if you plan to leave campus so they know.

As a first-year student, how can I get involved on campus?

There are plenty of ways to get involved on campus. You can join one of the many clubs and organizations on campus, get an on campus job, or volunteer at events in order to network and meet other students.
