What is Academic Engagement 

The Academic Engagement assignment for each of your courses in Canvas (even if your professor does not use Canvas for other course-related activities) asks you to set your intentions for your courses. Research has found that setting intentions helps students achieve their learning goals.

About the Assignment

This assignment has been developed by the University to support your learning, encourage your engagement with the class and meet compliance requirements established by the U.S. Department of Education. You will be asked to write what you hope to learn from each course you are taking. Please provide a short, two or three sentence response.

Please Note: Some classes begin later in the semester, check your schedule in NJIT Highlander Pipeline for the exact start date.

Instructions – Completing the Academic Engagement Assignment

  1. Log into NJIT Canvas.
  2. Click on each class you are registered for that is currently in session and has begun.
  3. Select the “Assignment” tab and complete the “Academic Engagement” activity.

  1. You should complete it during the first week of classes for each course (Please Note: You cannot complete it until the official start date of the class).
  2. If an academic activity is NOT provided/viewable or you have additional questions, follow these steps:
    • Check the start date of the course to verify it is in session.
    • If you still need assistance, provide your UCID, the course’s CRN, and details of the issue to the Help Desk at 973-596-2900 or email at ServiceDesk@njit.edu.

1. Why do I have to complete the Academic Engagement Assignment?

  • The Academic Engagement assignment is designed to assist you in setting your intentions – a critical step in supporting success in the classroom, and it meets a compliance requirement set by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • If you are a financial aid recipient, funds will not be disbursed to your account until all assignments are complete.

2. When should I complete the assignment?

  • You should complete the assignment at the start of the semester or academic term. You may not complete the assignment until the first day of class.

3. Are there repercussions for not completing the assignment?
