Scholar of the Month
Laura Wallace Memorial Scholarship
March 2025
“My most fulfilling experience at NJIT was receiving the Female Athlete of the Year award in 2024. I had absolutely zero clue that I would be nominated and selected to receive this honor. However, at last year’s Student Athlete Banquet when Athletics Director Lenny Kaplan was giving a speech on the recipient and their accomplishments, I was amazed to discover he was describing me! It meant so much to have my work and experience be recognized in this way.”
– Madeline Stevens, ’25
Our March Scholar of the Month is Madeline Stevens, a senior biology major, captain of the women’s track and field team and a proud recipient of the Laura Wallace Memorial Scholarship. Having come to NJIT from Nashua, NH, Madeline’s competitive, preserving and extroverted nature have allowed her to flourish in both Athletics and the Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts.
Madeline’s passion for biology, demonstrated in part by her 3.85 GPA, is motivated by a personal interest in improving healthcare for chronic conditions, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Upon witnessing the pitfalls in the healthcare industry in properly diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases like MS firsthand, Madeline has made it her mission to help fine-tune the process of accurately and efficiently diagnosing such conditions and to minimize the consequences of unintended neglect on patients and their families.
Despite being injured this season, Madeline can be seen on and off campus participating in multiple organizations tied to her major and her team. She is a member of the university’s Pre-Health Society, the North American Disease Intervention Club, the Minds Matter Club (a campus organization designed to raising awareness of mental health issues), and NJIT’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. This past summer, Madeline proved what an incredible team player she is while interning as a medical sales representative, physical therapy aid, and office administrator with Balance Rehabilitation and Health Science, LLC, a physical therapy clinic in New Hampshire.
After earning her undergraduate degree, Madeline plans to study return to NJIT to pursue her physician assistant masters’ degree through the university’s joint program with Rutgers Medical School. Upon earning her master’s and working in the field, she intends to focus her attention on examining and addressing issues related to guidelines for diagnosing health issues.
