Carcinogenic, reproductive toxins, and highly toxic materials on immediate contact are considered Particularly Hazardous Substances (PHS). The list of Selected Carcinogens, Toxics, reproductive toxins, and Reactive Substances is provided as a reference. This list contains many commonly used substances, but it is not an exhaustive list. Individuals need to use other references, such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS), to conclude whether a substance fits in one or more of the categories. Laboratories have to assure researchers' exposures do not exceed Permissible Exposure Limits set by OSHA specified in 29 CFR part 1910, subpart Z.
Carcinogens: Include substances that are regulated by OSHA as carcinogenic, listed under "Known To Be Carcinogens" or "Reasonably Anticipated To Be Carcinogens" in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) annual report, or listed as "Carcinogenic To Humans" or "Reasonably Anticipated To Be Carcinogens" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer Monographs (IARC).
