If you live in New Jersey, you must have a New Jersey driver’s license in order to drive a vehicle in the State of New Jersey, or other states.
The State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission issues driver licenses. You can read additional information about driver license applications on the Department of Homeland Security U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.
The State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission uses a 6 point ID verification system. One of the documents required is a Social Security Number (SSN). If you qualify for an SSN (have on or off campus employment), you should obtain this before going to the DMV. If you do not have employment and therefore are not eligible for an SSN, you will still have to ask the Social Security Administration for a letter confirming they cannot give you an SSN. This letter is called Form SSA-L676.
Additionally, you will be required to bring a copy of your NJIT Form I-20 to the DMV. This Form I-20 must indicate that you are a "continuing student" on page 1. If you are a new incoming student, or have applied for a change of status, your Form I-20 will indicate you are an "initial student". You will need to obtain an updated copy of your Form I-20 after your first semester has begun, or your change of status has been approved. You may request a reprint of your form I-20 via the online request form.
