J-1 scholars are foreign nationals that are employees, professors, research scholars, or persons with similar education or accomplishments in foreign universities, research lab, or companies, and are expected to engage in collaborative research with existing NJIT faculty.
The 12- and 24-month bars are different from the two-year home country residence requirement.
The bars prohibit certain “repeat participation” in the Research Scholar or Professor categories only. The chart below indicates if the category requires that an individual waits 12 months, 24 months, or no time at all before he or she could obtain a new J-1 Research Scholar or Professor visa based on what the previous J status was. It is possible that a J-1 visitor has no wait time related to the 12- and 24-month bars but is subject to the two year home residency requirement.
