The purpose of the J-1 visa program is “to provide foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural programs in the United States and return home to share their experiences, and to encourage Americans to participate in educational and cultural programs in other countries.”

Exchange Students: Students who are pursuing a degree at a partner university can attend classes at NJIT as an exchange student.
Prescribed Study : Non-degree seeking students, who are pursuing a degree in their home country and wish to come to NJIT for a short period of time to undertake research. The research conducted at NJIT will be supervised under a specific professor/department and related to their degree back home.
Scholars: J-1 Scholars are foreign nationals that are employees, professors, research scholars, or persons with similar education or accomplishments in foreign universities, research lab, or companies, and are expected to engage in collaborative research with existing NJIT faculty. Prospective scholars should refer to the information listed on the NJIT Office of Research website.
Degree-Seeking: Students who are pursuing a degree at NJIT.
