Pre-Departure Checklist
There is a lot to remember before, and after, you arrive in New Jersey. Use this checklist as a reference to make sure nothing gets lost in the process.
Before You Travel
- Make two sets of copies of important documents, such as your passport and your visa. Leave one set of copies with a trusted person at home and bring an extra copy with you.
- If you take medicine regularly, fill any necessary prescriptions.
- Reconfirm flight with airline at least 48 hours in advance. Check baggage weight limits.
Note that health insurance is automatically charged to all F-1 and J-1 NJIT students. Please go to our website to see details regarding the insurance. On this page, you will find more information about its usage and benefits. In the past some insurance policies bought overseas were not accepted in the U.S. Be aware that health costs can be very expensive in the U.S. Therefore, we encourage you to purchase the NJIT insurance.
J-1 visa holders and their dependents must carry insurance coverage that meets minimum requirements set by U.S. Department of State. The student insurance provided by NJIT meets these requirements.
Specific insurance questions should be addressed to healthservices@njit.edu.
Packing Basics
As you prepare to come to the U.S., don’t forget to pack these items with you:
- Clothing for all four seasons (shorts, short-sleeve shirts to pant, boots, and sweaters, clothes that can layer easily)
- Bath towel
- Toiletries
- Jacket and umbrella
- Eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses and cleaning solution
- First aid kit (including: motion sickness medications, laxatives, anti-diarrhea medicine, antacids, pain relievers, decongestants, antiseptics, and bandages)
- Prescription medicines and written prescriptions
- Laptop/iPad
- Comfortable shoes
- Backpack
At the Airport
When you arrive at the airport you will need to have available and in hand the following documents for the immigration official:

- I-901 SEVIS Fee receipt
- New Jersey Institute of Technology Acceptance letter
- Contact information of the Designated School Officer/Responsible Officer (see below)
