NJIT TEACHING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS WORKSHOP

This workshop is designed for international PhD students who will be serving as new Teaching Assistants (TAs) at NJIT in Fall 2025. It focuses on developing essential teaching and communication skills necessary for success in this role. To this effect, the workshop includes an assessment of the TAs' spoken English.  More details will be shared on this website as the date of the workshop approaches.

It is recommended, though not required, that all new international PhD students entering NJIT in Fall 2025 with an RA (Research Assistantship) award attend the workshop since they must also possess a high level of English communication skills.

Workshop Details

Dates:

  • Monday, August 25th
  • Tuesday, August 26th
  • Thursday, August 28th

Location: NJIT Campus (specific location to be announced on this website and via your NJIT email)

Time: (To be announced)

Attendance:

  • Mandatory for all international students entering NJIT with a TA award in Fall 2025 or who started as a TA in Spring 2025.
  • Recommended for all international students entering NJIT with an RA award in Fall 2025.
  • Participants must attend all three days.

UCAN Orientation: On Wednesday, August 27th, new TAs must attend the UCAN Orientation event. Details will be emailed to TAs during the summer.

Why This Workshop is Essential

As a TA, your responsibilities may include:

  • Instructing courses
  • Leading laboratory or recitation sections
  • Tutoring students
  • Grading assignments

This workshop provides international TAs with the tools and strategies to excel in these areas. It will help you:

  • Effectively communicate with students.
  • Develop strong teaching skills.
  • Understand the expectations and responsibilities of a TA at NJIT.

Workshop Includes

  • An assessment of spoken English skills.
  • Training in teaching methodologies and best practices.

Registration Deadline

  • May 10, 2025: For students who accepted their TA offer before May 10th.
  • Within two weeks of accepting your offer: For students who receive their TA offer letter after May 10th (as per the instructions in your offer letter).
