Returning to NJIT to Finish Your Degree
Maintain registration or apply for readmission?
Even though we don’t want to, sometimes we have to take a semester or more off because of life events. Depending on how long you plan to be away and if you plan to take courses elsewhere while you are gone, we will direct you as to what your best option may be: maintain registration or apply for readmission? It’s important to make sure you talk to your advisor and make a plan. If you still have questions, contact us at persist@NJIT.edu.
Things To Know
MAINTAIN REGISTRATION
Maintain registration is the best option if you plan to step away for only a semester or two. This keeps you active so you can register for classes without having to do anything else, and costs less than readmission. It also allows you to keep your Degree Works requirements as they currently are. If you are able to add maintain registration to your account through your Pipeline, use the CRN that reflects your academic standing. If you are unable to access your Pipeline, email persist@NJIT.edu and request maintain registration added to your account.
READMISSION
If you have to step away from your studies for more than a semester or two without maintain registration, or you’ve taken credits elsewhere, complete an Application for Readmission.
Did you take classes somewhere else while you took time away from NJIT? Remember to submit the transcript when you apply for readmission so the courses are evaluated and posted to your Degree Works before you speak to your advisor. This will ensure a smooth transition back to NJIT and most importantly, not waste time by taking courses you already have credit for or not knowing which requirements the credits will fulfill. Another great resource to help is to review NJTransfer for community college courses and the potential equivalencies to NJIT courses.
ADVISEMENT
Whether you have an advisor hold that needs to be removed or you don't, it’s always a good idea to review your Degree Works and discuss your plan toward graduation with your advisor, especially after taking a break in your studies.
