Training Programs
NJIT’s Environmental Health and Safety Department (EHS) offers a variety of Health and Safety training programs for the university community. Currently, most EHS safety training programs are being offered in an on-line format via the Canvas Learning Management System or via WebEx. Please click on the Training Session Schedule link for additional information.
The following training programs are currently available:
- General Laboratory Safety: Lab safety training takes approximately 2 hours to complete and is intended for new and returning students, faculty and staff who will be working in NJIT labs. The lab safety training session will cover Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene, Laboratory Hazards, Emergency Response, and Waste Management.
- Biological Safety and Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP): Biological Safety and BBP Training takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete and is available for researchers and others who may handle, store, manipulate and/or dispose biologic and recombinant materials. The training provides a review of biological safety and bloodborne pathogen exposure control principles, practices, and guidelines as required by the CDC/NIH Biological Safety Guidelines (BMBL); the NIH Recombinant DNA Guidelines; and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. This training is required for all personnel who work with or may be potentially exposed to human blood, blood products, human tissues, human body fluids, human cells lines (including those obtained from commercial sources) as well as recombinant materials. Those attending biological safety training should also attend Lab Safety Training.
- Radiation Safety Training: Radiation safety training takes approximately 1 hour to complete and is intended for students, faculty, and staff who will be working with ionizing radiation generating equipment, sealed sources or loose material of ionizing radiation (X-ray machines, Ni63 sources, or benchtop radioisotopes). Those working with benchtop radioisotopes will also require additional in-lab training. Those attending radiation safety training should also attend Lab Safety Training.
- LASER Safety Training: Laser safety training takes approximately 1 hour to complete and is intended for students, faculty and staff who will be working with lasers including lasers embedded within analytical equipment. Those attending laser safety training should also attend Lab Safety Training.
- Industrial and Shop Safety Training: Industrial and shop safety training takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete and is intended for new and returning students, faculty and staff who will be working (or taking classes) in NJIT shops or industrial settings, e.g., non-lab settings. The Shop Safety training session will cover Right to Know, Hazard Communication, General Shop Safety, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety, Emergency Response, and Universal Waste Management.
- Additional program-specific small group trainings are also available by arrangement with EHS. Examples include BBP training for non-laboratory settings, hazard communication training for non-lab settings, respirator training, spill prevention countermeasures and control (SPCC) training, and Facilities Safety Training.
