Gifts
In accordance with the New Jersey Conflicts of Interest Law and the Ethics Regulations, an NJIT officer or employee is prohibited from accepting any gift, favor, service, or other things of value related in any way to the NJIT's officer/employee's official NJIT duties. Should a gift be received, kindly fill out the Gifts Form to inform the Ethics Office about the gift you have received. The gift must immediately be sent to the Ethics Liaison Officer, along with the name and address of the individual/entity it was received from.
A gift or item of value includes, but is not limited to, compensation; money; a stock, bond, note or other investment in an entity; employment, the offer of employment; gift; reward; honorarium; favor; goods, service; loan; the forgiveness of indebtedness; gratuity; property or real property; labor; fee; commission; contribution; rebate or discount in the price of any item of value; an automobile or other means of personal transportation; entertainment; meal, or any other item of value.
This restriction does not apply to:
- A gift from supervisor to employee, from employee to supervisor, or from employee to employee provided that the gift or item of value does not raise a reasonable question concerning whether the gift or item of value was given or offered to improperly influence an individual in carrying out his or her duties; and
- NJIT officers and employees serving at NJIT in a scholarly capacity*, when the gift or item of value reflects payment for orally or verbally sharing his/her intellectual property orally or in writing, acting in an editorial capacity for a journal or other publication or reviewing journal or book manuscripts, or grants or contract proposals, or participating in accreditation or other peer review activities.
* Scholarly capacity means any pedagogical, academic, artistic, educational, or scholarly activity performed by an individual for the institution of higher education that employs or has appointed such State official.
