LGBTQ+ Resources and Support
The Office of Inclusive Excellence serves as a support, resource, and educational space for services related to the LGBTQ+ identity. We continually work to ensure that the campus feels welcoming and supportive to all students, and we encourage feedback and suggestions as we continue to offer resources and programming.
We welcome you to explore the websites and links below and visit our office in the Campus Center located in room 255 or contact us at InclusiveExcellence@njit.edu

On Campus Resources
NJIT Preferred Name Statement
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is committed to creating a campus environment that is inclusive of everyone’s culture, identity, and background. This commitment fosters an institutional culture where all members of the community feel welcomed and a sense of belonging.
With a strong commitment to creating an inclusive campus community, NJIT embraces the diversity of all students, faculty and staff who wish to use a preferred name in all university settings. We strive to ensure all members of the campus community respectfully use an individual’s preferred name in all university settings and support an individual to self-identify however they choose.
NJIT defines preferred name as the name by which a person wishes to be known and to have appeared in university systems, and marketing and communications, except where legal name is required. A Legal Name is defined as the name that is recorded on legal identification and used on formal legal records and documents. Preferred names are individual choices and should always align with NJIT’s Core Values.
Using self-service through Banner, at any time, a student, faculty, or staff member may update their preferred name. It may take several days for the preferred name to appear on university systems, documents, and records. You may request a new ID card by visiting the Photo ID office. Per the requirements of law and/or certain legal identification purposes, an individual’s legal name may be used for legal records and documents, including transcripts and diplomas.
Using self-service through Banner, at any time, a student, faculty, or staff member may update their preferred name. Please see the following instructions on updating your preferred first name: How to update your Preferred First Name.
Gender Inclusive Housing
Gender Inclusive housing refers to a housing option in which two or more students mutually agree to share a multiple occupancy bedroom, suite, or apartment without regard to the gender of the occupants. Interested students will select the Gender Inclusive housing option when they apply for housing and indicate the name of the student(s) they would like to live with. Residence Life will assign the students to a room/suite based on the request and email the students the room assignment information.
LGBTQ+ Housing
We offer students an opportunity to be matched to live with a roommate who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, or an ally (LGBTQA+). An ally is defined as someone who identifies as straight and wants to be supportive of those who identify as LGBTQA+. Interested students will select the LGBTQA+ option when they apply for housing. Residence Life will pair up students based on class year, roommate requests and/or community type requests. Students will be notified of their room assignments via email.

Statement on Inclusion and Diversity:
Students in this course are encouraged to participate freely and share personal opinions, perspectives, and stories. It is expected that there will be diverse and perhaps contradictory ideas shared; this variety is a strength of the academic community. Students are asked to show respect and treat peers in a way that validates various experiences and opinions based on a range of identities including ability, economic class, ethnicity, faith tradition or no faith, gender identity and expression, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, and their intersections. Acts of bias, harassment, abuse, discrimination, relationship violence, sexual violence (i.e. sexual assault, sexual harassment, etc.), gender harassment, and stalking are not tolerated at NJIT. If you or someone you care about has experienced any one of these crimes and/or violations of NJIT Community Standards, please know that you have rights, reporting options, and other support services available to you.
