A mobile credential is the electronic version of your physical photo ID card. It is loaded into an application (app) on your mobile phone that is called Symmetry Mobile.
A mobile credential can be shown to someone (similar to a photo ID card) to identify yourself on campus. It can also be used at "tap" reader on campus for access to buildings, rooms or parking. The mobile credential app uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with tap readers. If you have pre-authorized access to the reader, the mobile credential will give you access. If you do not have access to the reader (or if your mobile credential has been deactivated for some reason), the reader will not give you access.
No, a mobile credential is optional.
Upon eligibility, the photo ID office will send you an invitation email with directions and a unique QR code.
Load the app called "Symmetry Mobile" onto your mobile phone from the Apple Store or Google Play.
Use the Symmetry Mobile app to scan the unique QR code within your invitation email.
Follow the directions on the screen and then you are all set.
The Symmetry Mobile app is the application you must have on your mobile phone before you load your NJIT mobile credential into the app's wallet. The manufacturer of the NJIT card access system called AMAG Technologies developed this app to function on their card access system platform called AMAG Symmetry. The app can run on IOS version 12.1 or Android OS version 8.0 (or above).
Active faculty and staff.
Existing or transfer students who are:
- Enrolled with an NJIT campus-based major
- Registered for 1 or more credit hours
- Rutgers, ECC or high school students are not eligible
First Year Students who are accepted and deposited
Consultants, contractors, tenants, visitors, etc. are not eligible
Yes, you will also receive a photo ID card as it has additional function.
No, you can only have one mobile credential on one mobile phone at any given time.
No. You should never share your mobile credential (or your photo ID card) for any reason. By doing so, you are compromising the function that is associated with the credential or card. You may also face disciplinary actions if you share your credential or card.
Open the application (app) called Symmetry Mobile on your mobile phone.
Select your previously loaded NJIT mobile credential in the app's wallet.
Gently present/tap your phone to the card reader for access. Read ranges will vary.
Hint: If you do not close the app, you can simply unlock your phone in order to use it at the nex reader.
Your phone must be unlocked for the Symmetry Mobile app to function and communicate. By logging into your phone, we are also better assured that you are the person using the app for access.
Yes, the app uses Bluetooth communication to the reader and so Bluetooth must be enabled. The app also periodically communicates to our database that is located in the cloud so that it is always updated with a current status. If your phone's data is turned off (WiFi and cellular) for an extended period, the credential will stop working and will automatically remove itself after a prolonged period of time.
If you already have a photo ID card when you load your mobile credential, the same photo that is on your card will be automatically applied to your mobile credential.
If you load your mobile credential onto your phone before you obtain a photo ID card, you will need to load your photo into the mobile app by clicking on "load photo" and following the instructions. Your mobile credential will not function until a photo is loaded and approved by the photo ID office. Please allow up to two workdays for photos to be approved.
Once a photo is associated with your mobile credential within the Symmetry Mobile app, you cannot change it. You must go to the photo ID office in order to have our operator change your photo in our system.
No, not everything. The following functions are NOT available via a mobile credential:
- Cafeteria meal plans
- Library book checkout
- Resident room access
The following can be done with a mobile credential (if a department previously authorized you)
- Building card access
- Lab, office suite and room card access
- Parking card access
The mobile credential automatically updates itself to our system database so that if stays current. You may select "update credential" at any time you want to force an update.
This bar code is a standard built-in feature in Symmetry Mobile that others can scan via a feature called "Identity Checker" to verify that your credential is valid. This bar coded is NOT something that can be used by other applications.
Identity Checker ia a standard built-in feature in Symmetry Mobile that allows the user to check someone else's mobile credential to see if it is valid. You can select this feature from the Symmetry Mobile app menu. Upon doing so, you can scan someone else's mobile credential bar code to see if it is valid.
Hint: Return to your app's wallet via the app menu when you are done using identity checker.
After you have your new mobile phone in hand (and functional), please send an email to mobilecredential@njit.edu from your NJIT.EDU email address indicating that you wish to transfer your mobile credential to a new phone. Please include your name, NJITID# or UCID in the body of the email to help us identify you. Upon receipt (and within two business days), the photo ID office will revoke your old credential (from wherever if may be) and will sen out a new invitation email to your njit.edu account so that you can load your mobile credential onto your new phone.
Hint: Before you turn off your old phone for the last time, you may want to select "Remove Credential" within the Symmetry mobile app in order to remove the credential from your old phone. You do not have to do this, but it is a good idea to do so for added security
Send an email to mobilecredential@njit.edu from your NJIT. EDU email address indicating that you lost your mobile phone and credential. Please include your name, NJITID# or UCID in the body of the email to help us identify you. Upon receipt, the photo ID office will revoke your old credential (from wherever it may be). When you get a replacement mobile phone, follow the process above for replacing a phone.
Send an email to mobilecredential@njit.edu from your NJIT.EDU email address indicating that you removed your mobile credential from your phone in error. Please include your name, NJITID# or UCID in the body of the email to help us identify you. Upon receipt, the photo ID office will revoke your old credential (from wherever it may be) and will send out a new invitation email to your njit.edu account so that you can reload your mobile credential onto your phone.
If you lose your photo ID card, please report to the photo ID office located at 131 Summit Street in order to obtain a new card which will have a new card number. A $25 replacement card fee will need to be paid at the bursar window (or charged to your student bursar account). Since your photo ID card number is also associated with your mobile credential, our operator will also revoke your old mobile credential and sen you a new mobile credential invitation at that time.
