In addition to obtaining a traditional photo ID card, eligible students, faculty and staff may obtain a mobile credential that can be displayed on their mobile phone (via a free app).
A mobile credential is the electronic version of your photo ID card. It is loaded into a free application (app) on your mobile phone that is called Symmetry Mobile. Your mobile credential can be shown to someone (similar to a photo ID card) to identify yourself on campus. It can also communicate to “tap” readers on campus (using Bluetooth) in order to gain access to buildings, rooms or parking.
The NJIT photo ID office is in the process of inviting eligible students, faculty and staff (via email) to load a mobile credential onto their mobile phone. New employees will get automatically invited (via email) to load a mobile credential onto their phone after receiving their NJIT photo ID card. Loading a mobile credential is optional. Please note that only one mobile credential may be activated on one mobile phone at any given time.
The NJIT mobile credential requires the user to first load a free app called Symmetry Mobile onto their mobile phone from the Apple App Store or Android Google Play (depending on the type of phone the user has). The Apple App Store and Android Google Play links are below:
Once you have loaded the Symmetry Mobile app onto your mobile phone, please open the app. When prompted to accept Location, Bluetooth or Camera settings please select YES.
From the app’s menu select Add New Credential and point your camera at the QR code (that is in the body of the invitation email) to load your unique NJIT Mobile Credential onto your phone. Please note that this QR code can only be used one time on one phone and so please do so only on the phone that you normally carry.
Note: Both QR codes are the same, and if your are viewing the invitation on your phone, it is easiest to save the attached QR code file as a photo on your phone then use the import QR code Option. If you are viewing your email on a separate computer (or if you print the email), the scan QR code option can be used to scan the QR code that is in the email body.
After loading, select your NJIT mobile credential from the app’s wallet and present your phone to the campus “tap” readers that you have access to.
