FAQs
This is an academic course or program with a study abroad component. These are rigorous academic courses or programs that are much like attending classes at NJIT, but take place in another country.
There are different types of Faculty Led Study Abroad programs: sometimes the majority of the course is taken in Newark, and at one point in the semester, the class visits the relevant location abroad; sometimes the entire course is conducted abroad.
See "Am I eligible?" for more.
A course abroad is a NJIT course conducted fully abroad. Students must complete the separate application process prior to class registration in order to travel abroad.
Students will undergo an application process and then be allowed to register for the course. Please communicate with your Faculty Leader and make them aware of your intent to take the course.
Eligibility varies by program, but the main criteria are:
- A cumulative 2.75 GPA or higher
- Good academic standing
Attend information sessions, ask the faculty leader, review the application, or ask the Study Abroad Advisor at studyabroad@njit.edu if you are eligible.
Depending upon the program, you can upload your passport application receipt in place of a passport so that you can apply for the program. Let the Study Abroad Department know, and the team will work with you.
Ask your Faculty Leaders about programs in the department. Typically, your Leaders are already 12 to 9 months before the program start date to help you prepare the documents and finances needed. Please reach out to us with your questions.
Depending upon your program, you can apply once you check with the Faculty Leader that you meet the prerequisite requirements or attend one of the information sessions to see how you can receive the application.
If your program is attached to a course and you're earning credit for that course, you need to ensure with the Faculty Leader that you can attend that course, and then apply via the Study Abroad Faculty Led Program Application Process.
Testimonials
“I went to my Summer Study Abroad in Austria and I came back with 70,000 photos. As
a student I couldn’t be happier with how much value this experience added to my
architectural view and understanding but also left me with an unforgettable summer.”
-Isabella Gil
"Studying abroad in Austria with my class was an enriching experience that broadened
my design perspective. Vienna's historic architecture and cultural vibrancy, Krems'
picturesque landscapes, and Innsbruck's Alpine charm provided diverse inspirations for
our studio projects. Immersing myself in this unique environment not only enhanced my
architectural skills but also left me with unforgettable memories."
-Valeria Gomez
“This once in a lifetime experience of studying abroad has taught me how to appreciate
the opportunities that I have. It has also helped me recognize what I want in my life and
has inspired me to have fun while doing challenging things. Not everything has to be so
demanding if you just relax while doing it :) “
-Angelica Valinoti
“It was wonderful to be able to work in the studio at Newark and then work on it in
Austria with a different perspective after experiencing the site"
- Maitri Amin
“I had a wonderful time on the Austria study abroad program this summer. There was
amazing food, great views, and a fun time experiencing different cultures! I think this
studio gave us an experience that was similar to what we would experience in a firm
when it comes to working alongside and getting feedback from a real client.”
- Mateo Fuentes
“My favorite part about the trip was the biking tour and hiking the alps.”
-Albina Zhaku
