Weston Hall Lecture Halls Renovation
In spring 2017, Marvel Architects completed a concept and planning study for six lecture halls on the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) campus. Weston Lecture Hall 160, 262, and adjacent corridors C101 and C102 were selected as the third of this group to receive necessary upgrades to AV technology, Lighting, Seating, Acoustics, and other interior finishes. Marvel Architects has worked with Silman Engineers, KeRi Engineering, Jim Conti Lighting, the Sextant Group AV, Acoustical consultants and Anser Advisory to program and design the improvements.
The project scope includes interior renovation work for Lecture Hall 160 and Lecture Hall 262A with adjacent storefront and presentation corridors C101 and C102. Scope includes minor room reconfiguration with structural wall and slab modifications. The scope also includes new interior finish materials, replacement fixed seating system, millwork benches and wall panels, new AV equipment, new mechanical systems, new lighting and controls, upgraded electrical and telecom, new sprinklers, and revised fire alarm.
Brahma Construction was selected as the General Contractor. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2020
Cullimore Hall Lecture Hall Renovation
Cullimore Lecture Hall #103, along with an adjacent office and AV storage room, are being considered for renovation/refresh. The schedule for the renovation anticipates design completion by March 3, 2021, and construction taking place from May 2021 through August 2021.
Cullimore Lecture Hall #103 is pedagogically and experientially important to NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts. It is likely that most College of Science and Liberal Arts students, and many of its faculty, will spend time in this lecture hall as a setting for instruction and learning, in particular, mathematics. The “broader public” might also attend lectures or presentations within the lecture hall, including the general campus community, as well as prospective students and their parents. The proposed project offers an opportunity to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the lecture hall which will benefit the entire campus community. The hall currently accommodates 79 people in fixed seating in addition to the instructor(s).
The renovation of Cullimore Lecture Hall #103 is expected to be a complete renovation project. As such, the design of the project will be completed by the NJIT Campus Planning, Design, and Construction Department, Parette Somjen Architects, and Keri Engineering. In addition to an upgrade of the lecture hall itself, improvements to the public’s approach to the lecture hall are also being considered. The project scope of work includes the following;
- Replace the seating w/ high durability and quality materials
- Consider the provision of power to each seat
- Replace the existing ceiling mounted acoustic panels and lighting attached to the exposed concrete floor/fin structure, consider a complete redesign of the acoustic, lighting, and HVAC systems
- Redesign entry area to the lecture hall
- Provide new flooring
- Repair and repaint existing walls – consider a redesign of walls and millwork
- Provide power and data where necessary
- Upgrade the wireless access points
- Provide presenter/instructor’s podium options and storage
- Replace and increase white/chalkboards
- Remove existing projection booth
- Consider improved “transparency/visibility” for the lecture hall, from the corridor and possibly the exterior
- Improve acoustic performance
- Upgrade AV
