Weston Hall Building
NJIT and J.P. Patti Tecta America are leading a team consisting of Diaz Architect & Associates, P.C. and C&D Restoration Inc. to perform a roof replacement and façade restoration project for Weston Hall of the NJIT Newark campus. The project has been phased in a systematic fashion to accommodate campus life and events, university budget, and general public safety.
The Diaz Architect & Associates, P.C team developed a restoration design plan for Weston Hall that will correct deficiencies but keep the aesthetic of the original design. The scope of work initiated by J.P.Patti Tect America in 2020 included a roof replacement of both the original and addition wing of Weston Hall building. The façade restoration project continues with C&D Restoration Inc. in 2021, which is a portion of the overall multi-year façade restoration project limited to the southwest corner with bulkhead and the lower portion of the northeast corner.
At both the northeast and southwest corners of the building, the corner will be demolished to the structural steel columns, where the steel columns will be cleaned, primed and painted. The substrate will be reconstructed with a new waterproofing membrane, to provide longevity of the structural elements and drain any moisture within the cavity wall assembly. The relieving angles of each floor will be replaced and extended to the corner. The brick corner reconstruction will either replace or introduce an expansion joint at or near the corner steel column. The face brick will be replaced to match existing size, texture, color and secured with stainless steel anchors and ties.
The southwest bulkhead will be re-sealed at parapet wall metal coping joints and a new through wall flashing introduced at the base of the bulkhead walls. The inboard face of the bulkhead will include a new stucco finish with an elastomeric coating to preserve the finish and prevent water infiltration of the previously exposed concrete masonry unit wall.
The teamwork between NJIT, J.P. Patti Tecta America, Diaz Architect & Associates, P.C., C&D Restoration Inc. will ensure that Weston Hall is renovated so that it can continue to be an environment for teaching, learning and collaborating.
