January 2020 ITE Workshop
The Institute for Teaching Excellence (ITE) is pleased to announce the ITE January 2020 Workshop, to be held on Tuesday, January 14th.
The program is open to all faculty and instructional staff. Registration is free, breakfast and lunch will be provided, and there will be a drawing for prizes at the end of the day.
Interested colleagues are kindly asked to register by filling out the registration form no later than January 7th, 2020.
These sessions have been designed to include hands-on activities. It is recommended that participants bring their laptops to the workshop. Laptops will be provided for those who need one on a first-come, first-served basis.

9:30-10:30 | Canvas Overview This session will provide and introduction to Canvas. Learn how to access Canvas, navigate, become familiar with the features (such as the Dashboard), and set up your account/profile. Amal Shah | Controlled Release (Mastery Paths & Prerequisites) Learn to leverage features that allow you to control how learning content is released to your students. Prerequisites allow you to further structure your course, requiring students to complete a set of activities before being able to access additional content. 10:30-11:30 | Setting up a Course & Creating Assignments Learn how to set up your course, add course materials (including course files), and create assignments. Cassie Sardo | Using Google Drive in your Canvas Course Learn to access, manage, and use your NJIT Google Drive with Canvas. Google Drive is a powerful tool that allows you to store, manage, and embed files, documents, presentations, videos, and spreadsheets into your course. Mike Cowen (Instructure) |
11:30-12:30 | Creating Standard Quizzes in Canvas Learn how to create automatically graded quizzes. This session will include an overview of the types of questions you can create. Amal Shah | Using Rubrics in Canvas Rubrics are powerful assessment tools that allow you to clearly communicate to students what is expected for assignments. Rubrics are useful to reduce questions about how grades were determined or to assign partial credit. In Canvas, you can create and attach rubrics to your assignments. 1:30-2:30 | New Gradebook & Analytics This session is recommended for all users. Features that will be covered include how to set automatic grading policies for missing and late assignments, how to hide/unhide grades, as well as how to override grades that are calculated by Canvas. An overview of the analytics feature in Canvas will also be provided, including how to check the progress and performance of your students as well as how to check what content your students are engaging with. 2:30-3:30 | Using Canvas to Communicate with Students Canvas provides a number of ways for instructors to communicate with their students, including the Canvas inbox, discussions, and announcements. An overview of these features, as well as how to use them, will be covered. Nikki Bosca | Canvas New Quizzes & Question Banks This session will provide an overview of Canvas’s new quiz tool. The session will also dive into accessing quiz question banks, how to manage question banks, and how to use questions banks in both the standard quiz tool as well as the new quiz tool in Canvas.
