SCALE-UP stands for "Student-Centered Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies" and SCALE-UP classrooms are spaces used to promote active learning in classes with larger enrollment. The design of the space is intended to facilitate collaborative work among students.
"The basic idea is that you give students something interesting to investigate. While they work in teams, the instructor is free to roam around the classroom--asking questions, sending one team to help another, or asking why someone else got a different answer. There is no separate lab class and most of the "lectures" are actually class-wide discussions. We carefully structure the groups and give them many opportunities to interact." How can I use the NJIT SCALE-UP classroom?
NJIT now has a 90 seat classroom available for teaching in an active, SCALE-UP environment. We are looking for faculty who are interested in reserving the SCALE-UP classroom for their instructional use in their course(s) next semester. We are asking for interested instructors to please fill out this Google Form to request using this room. Preference will be given to larger classes who wish to use the SCALE-UP room for its active learning capabilities. The SCALE-UP classroom is typically not an appropriate environment for a traditional lecture class because of the furniture setting. Requests to use the facility in Fall 2017 should be submitted no later than March 10, 2017.
Interested in learning about the SCALE-UP pedagogy and use the classroom in the future?
The Institute for Teaching Excellence (ITE) with support from the Office of Digital Learning will offer opportunities for faculty to receive consultation and requests to use the space.
The Office of Digital Learning can assist faculty interested in using the SCALE-UP classroom. For questions regarding the room or to schedule a consultation appointment with an Instructional Designer for assistance, please email ite@njit.edu.
