Workshop Descriptions
-
Gradescope: This workshop offered guidance on remote/online delivery of assignments that are paper-based, fully online, and a combination of the two. We also covered the instructor workflow of using Gradescope integrated with Canvas. This workshop went through:
- Set up assignments where students can submit freeform work (no printers or templates needed)
- Grade your existing exams and homework on Gradescope
- Make rubric changes as you grade - changes apply to previously graded work to maintain consistency
- Write each comment only once - apply previously used comments with a click
- Use ‘assignment analytics’ to gain insight into student learning
- Take advantage of the Canvas integration
- Vocareum: Vocareum offers a broad set of cloud-based computer labs and an integrated assessment/learning infrastructure, as well as support for a large range of programming languages. Vocareum also offers LTI integration with other software platforms such as Blackboard, Canvas, etc. During this session, Vocareum outlined these labs and features of the infrastructure, and conducted a demonstration of the platform including how to set up assignments and grading, access the labs from an instructor and student standpoint, exam features, and more. Labs included cover Data Science, Machine Learning, Big Data, Database, Cloud Computing, Programming, Windows. Jupyter Notebook, JupyterHub and RStudio and are fully supported. Vocareum is currently in use by NJIT, and NJIT has an institution-wide license allowing access for all interested in evaluation or actual course use.
- Vocareum for Beginners: This workshop, facilitated by Vocareum, will introduce participants to the tool, which is designed to support coursework in Computer Science, Data Science, and any class that leverages computing labs and coding assessment, including plagiarism detection for coding assignments. Facilitators will explain how to get started with setting up and grading assignments, and how the tool integrates with Canvas.
- Humanize Your Online Course with Voicethread: Creating engaging online courses is not easy. In many discussion-board based courses, students feel isolated and disconnected from their instructors and classmates. VoiceThread bridges the gaps in social presence typically found in online courses. In this workshop, educators learned how to establish a social presence and connect with their students using VoiceThread to improve course satisfaction and student learning. We covered all of the basic VoiceThread features, demonstrated how everything works in Canvas, showcased a variety of examples from actual courses, and had an open Q&A throughout the training.
- Using Technology to Increase Engagement in the Face-to-Face Classroom: This workshop is for all instructional staff and will cover strategies for using technology to increase student engagement during face-to-face class sessions. Participants should bring a charged laptop, tablet, or mobile device. A teaser trailer for this workshop is linked: Teaser Trailer.
- Learning Outcomes, Measurability, and Alignment: This workshop will offer clear explanations and examples of Learning Outcomes, what it means for outcomes to be “measurable,” and how to ensure they are aligned with course activities and assessments. A Canvas-specific “Part II” to this workshop is offered later in the week to showcase the Outcomes and Master Path features in Canvas. A teaser trailer for this workshop is linked: Teaser Trailer.
- Canvas Training: Outcomes and MasteryPath: This workshop is hosted by Canvas. The trainer will focus on how to use the Outcomes and MasteryPath feature within your Canvas courses to map activities and assessments to course learning outcomes to best support students who may need additional support. For more background on MasteryPaths, click here.
- Grading in Canvas: Tips to Prep for Final Exams: This workshop is for all instructional staff and will cover how-tos for using the Canvas Gradebook and SpeedGrader, as well as how to add extra time to in-progress exams on Canvas. Facilitators will also offer some tips and strategies for running online/proctored exams in a face-to-face classroom. Instructors are encouraged to invite their TAs to attend as well.

Creating Digital Exams and Proctoring with Respondus and Record+(formerly called Review+): This session will go over the steps for digitizing exams in Canvas using the Classic Quiz tool as well as integrating them with our automated proctoring solutions, Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor and ProctorU Record+(formerly called Review+).
- UPDATE: The name "Record+" will be used in place of "Review+"ProctorU has rebranded proctoring service names. This is a change in name only and does not impact or alter the services NJIT has available for proctoring. If you were previously using Review+ as a proctoring solution for your course, you may continue to use the same service under the name Record+.
