Day 1 May 19, 2020
Part 1: NJIT’s transition to online learning and the importance of regular and substantive interaction | |

Presentation: This session will discuss how NJIT responded to the spring transition, pain points, and best practice strategies for teaching online. We will also discuss the participants’ goals for teaching online this summer and what regular and substantive interaction is in online courses. Presenters: Blake Haggerty and Nikki Bosca |
10:30- 11 | Activity: We will break-up into working groups to come up with examples of activities that can generate regular and substantive Interaction. |
Part 2: Components of a quality online course | |
11 - 11:30 |
Presentation: This session will focus on some best practice suggestions for teaching online. This includes:
For instructors teaching undergraduate courses we will discuss tips for using synchronous video conferencing tools. In particular we will discuss strategies for engaging students using the flipped classroom model. Presenters: Blake Haggerty and Nikki Bosca |
11:30 - 12 | Activity: We will break-up into working groups to come up with examples of how we could elicit student participation during synchronous course lectures. |
Part 3: Online assessment and additional resources | |
1 - 1:30 |
Presentation: This session will focus on strategies for assessing student learning online. This will include online proctoring as well as creating authentic assessment. We will also share NJIT’s Quality Assurance in eLearning Rubric which can be a useful guide when preparing an online course. Presenters: Blake Haggerty and Nikki Bosca |
1:30 - 1:50 | Activity: We will break up into groups and come up with examples of authentic assessment. |
Part 4: Panel discussion | |
2 - 3 |
Presentation: A panel of instructors will discuss strategies that they used this spring to successfully deliver online instruction. |

Presentation: This session will review some best practices for using Canvas. Presenters: Nikki Bosca, Amal Shah, Cassie Sardo |

Part 2: Canvas Communication Tools | |

Presentation: This session will review the Communication tools within Canvas and how they can be used to facilitate regular and substantive interaction with students. Presenters: Nikki Bosca, Amal Shah, Cassie Sardo |
11:30 - 12 | Activity: Participants will break-up into working groups and apply some of the tips that were discussed to their Canvas course. |
Part 3: Canvas Quizzes and Proctoring | |
1 - 2 |
Presentation: Participants will learn how to create a quiz in Canvas. The session will also cover some of the online proctoring options and how to configure them in Canvas. Presenters: Nikki Bosca, Amal Shah, Cassie Sardo |
2 - 2:30 | Activity: Participants will break-up into working groups and practice creating quizzes. |
Part 4: Webex Tips and Tricks | |

Presentation: This session will provide tips to help you become more comfortable with Webex. This will include scheduling, restricting access, sharing content, and resolving bandwidth issues. Presenters: Jesse House and Ryan Stack |
